Book Review: Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

Imagine if D&D and Animal Crossing had a baby. Legends & Lattes is a cozy, low-stakes, slice of life fantasy that is the ultimate comfort read.

Goodreads rating: 4.36

My rating: 5 Stars

Spoiler-free Summary:

After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time.

The battle-weary orc aims to start fresh, opening the first ever coffee shop in the city of Thune. But old and new rivals stand in the way of success — not to mention the fact that no one has the faintest idea what coffee actually is.

If Viv wants to put the blade behind her and make her plans a reality, she won’t be able to go it alone.

But the true rewards of the uncharted path are the travelers you meet along the way. And whether drawn together by ancient magic, flaky pastry, or a freshly brewed cup, they may become partners, family, and something deeper than she ever could have dreamed.

My Thoughts:

Legends & Lattes was my last read of 2022, and the first book I finished this year. It was just what I needed, especially after reading a lot of darker books near the end of the year.

I picked it up after seeing it in a BookTube video. I was intrigued by the premise of a low stakes fantasy story about an orc who wants to open up a coffee shop. The book was everything I hoped for and more.

I instantly fell in love with all of the characters, and the overall atmosphere of Thune. I’ve never read a book quite like this before. Yes, the stakes were “low” but at the same time, I couldn’t put it down. I was totally invested in Viv’s quest to open her coffee shop (and in her budding romantic relationship with a certain succubus). The story is so sweet and different than the fantasy stories that I am used to. I am also a sucker for the found family trope and it is top notch in this book.

Reading this book felt like a much needed catch up with old friends, even though I had just met the characters. I am very much looking forward to reading the upcoming prequel novel.

If you’re looking for a fantasy that offers a change of pace, with endearing characters and a comforting atmosphere, then definitely give this one a try.

Happy reading!
